1. Australian Rules drills - shortball drills

   1.1  Tap and crumb
For coaching footballers aged U/8 to senior, you will need groups of 3 players and 2 footballs per group. The length of this drill is 2 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length. This is a handball drill to practice mid-length handballing and short kicking. Use this drill early in the training session, or perhaps in between longer exercises for recovery.

Ages Senior, U/16, U/14, U/12, U/10, U/8.

Skills Handball (average), Ruck.
Purpose This drill is good pre-season as it develops aerobic fitness through an intense 60-90 second period of jumping up high and bending down low. It's also useful for improving the crumbing skills of taller players.

   1.2  Marking contest 1-on-1
For coaching footballers aged U/8 to senior, you will need 8 players, 1 cone and 1 football. The length of this drill is 15 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.Use this drill early in the training session, or perhaps in between longer exercises for recovery. This is a handball drill to practice mid-length handballing and contested marking.

Skills Handball (average), Contested Mark. *Light contact or inferred pressure.
Purpose It's very handy having smaller players in the team who are strong overhead and can take a mark up forward. This drill pits players of similar stature against one another in a marking contest to improve marking ability.

2. Australian Rules drills - half oval drills

   2.1  Backdoor infield from a stoppage
For coaching footballers aged senior, this drill requires 16+ players and 2+ footballs. Tackling is used, so consider players with injuries. This drill practices short kicking, mid-length kicking, long kicking, goalkicking, quick handballing, mid-length handballing, long handballing, contested marking, tackling, short kicking, short kicking and short kicking. The length of this drill is 80 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.Use this drill midway through the session.

Skills *Competitive* Kicking, Goalkicking, Handball, Contested Mark, Tackle, Shepherd, Ruck, Crumb.
Purpose At stoppages, defenders prefer to stand between the throw-ins/ups and the goal, to avoid a tap forward into space. This can be overcome by moving the ball backwards and infield to a running player, centralising the attack and thereby increasing the area a forward to lead into.

   2.2  Handball soccer
For coaching footballers aged U/8 to senior, this drill requires 12+ players, 12 cones and 1 football. Tackling is used, so consider players with injuries. This is a handball drill to practice quick handballing, mid-length handballing, long handballing, tackling, short kicking and short kicking. Use this drill midway through the session. The length of this drill is 40 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.

Skills *Competitive* Handball, Tackle, Shepherd, Crumb.
Purpose Oaccassionally, games can make training more enjoyable, whilst still making players work hard. This physically demanding drill practices working the ball with handball through traffic while the opposing team must work to defend and create a turnover.

3. Australian Rules drills - full oval drills

   3.1  Circle tag goalkicking
For coaching footballers aged U/8 to senior, you will need 20 players and 2 footballs. Use this drill towards the end of training. The length of this drill is 200 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length. This drill practices short kicking, mid-length kicking, long kicking, goalkicking, quick handballing, mid-length handballing, long handballing and short kicking.

Ages Senior, U/16, U/14, U/12, U/10, U/8.

Purpose This drill combines clean ball movement up one side of the ground until a forward is well-placed for a shot on goal, with some hard running after disposal.

   3.2  Goalkicking race
For coaching footballers aged U/8 to senior, you will need 20 players and 2 footballs. Use this drill towards the end of training. Tackling is used, so consider players with injuries. This drill practices short kicking, mid-length kicking, long kicking, goalkicking, quick handballing, mid-length handballing, long handballing, contested marking, tackling and short kicking. The length of this drill is 200 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.

Purpose Quick, direct ball movement should be practiced as this form of attack gives the opposition no time to push back and block the space, and reduces the chance of a skill error.
This drill practices long direct play in a fun contest to be the quickest to score a goal
