1. Australian Rules coaching resources - shortball drills
|
1.1 Spin out of trouble | | For coaching footballers aged U/12 to senior, you will need 12 players, 6 cones and 1+ footballs. The length of this drill is 30 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length. This resource develops quick handballing and long handballing. Use this drill early in the training session, or perhaps in between longer exercises for recovery.

| Purpose |
To avoid a tackle, players can change direction by sidestepping and spinning their body around 180 degrees. After this spin, the player may still be held and need to quickly dispose of the ball by hand. This drill practices handballing to a constant loud voice of a teammate while slightly disoriented after a spin. |

|
2.1 Attack to defense | | For coaching footballers aged U/16 to senior, this drill requires 20+ players, 10 cones and 1 football. This drill practices short kicking and mid-length handballing. The length of this drill is 70 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.Use this drill midway through the session.

| Purpose |
Running with the ball always seems easier than running to chase, however players must do both with equal intensity. This drill practices running the ball in lines with handball, then chasing hard once a turnover has occurred. |

This is a kicking drill to practice short kicking, mid-length kicking and contested marking. Use this drill midway through the session. The length of this drill is 80 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.

| Purpose |
Players must learn to steadying and hit a leading target when running at pace, even if there is an opponent chasing at close range. This drill helps build an awareness of how quickly the ball must be put onto the boot, and delivering the ball accurately when hot. |

3.1 Centering kick or shot | | For coaching footballers aged U/16 to senior, you will need 18 players, 10 cones and 3 footballs. Use this drill towards the end of training. This drill practices mid-length kicking, long kicking and long handballing.

| Purpose |
When a player is within goalkicking range, they need to quickly sum up their distance and angle to determine whether a shot on goal is the better option, or a pass to a leading forward is preferable. This drill makes players pick up a loose ball and decide upon the best action. |

3.2 4 group competitive goal | | For coaching footballers aged U/16 to senior, you will need 24 players and 3+ footballs. Use this drill towards the end of training. Tackling is used, so consider players with injuries. This drill practices short kicking, mid-length kicking, long kicking, goalkicking, quick handballing, mid-length handballing, long handballing, contested marking, tackling, short kicking and short kicking. The length of this drill is 200 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.
