1. Australian Rules coaching drills - shortball drills

   1.1  Left-Right Combo
For coaching footballers aged U/10 to senior, you will need groups of 3 players and 2 footballs per group. The length of this drill is 1 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length. This is a handball drill to practice quick handballing. Use this drill early in the training session, or perhaps in between longer exercises for recovery.

Ages Senior, U/16, U/14, U/12, U/10.

Skills Handball (quick).
Purpose The drill should be used pre-season and during warm-up to sharpen ball taking reflexes and develop reflex handball with both hands. Concentration is required to keep errors from creeping in when players become tired.

   1.2  Standing Kick
For coaching footballers aged U/8 to senior, you will need groups of 3 players, 2 cones and 1 football per group. The length of this drill is 10 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.Use this drill early in the training session, or perhaps in between longer exercises for recovery. This is a kicking drill to practice short kicking.

Skills Kick (short).
Purpose Poor kicking technique can be remedied especially at an early age. This drill teaches players to remain balanced and guide the ball onto their foot rather than drop it haphazardly from a height. without the added difficulty of running while doing so.

   1.3  Roving Repetition
For coaching footballers aged U/8 to senior, this drill requires groups of 3 players and 10 footballs per group. This is a handball drill to practice mid-length handballing, short kicking and short kicking. The length of this drill is 5 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.Use this drill early in the training session, or perhaps in between longer exercises for recovery.

Skills Handball (average), Ruck, Crumb.
Purpose Communication between onballers is required to win clearances. Stoppages are the focus of this drill, with multiple opportunities for rucks and rovers to gain an understanding of one another. Rovers practice their mobility and concentration when tired.

2. Australian Rules coaching drills - half oval drills

   2.1  8-point front and square kick
For coaching footballers aged U/8 to senior, this drill requires 20+ players, 8 cones and 3+ footballs. This drill practices long kicking, mid-length handballing, long handballing and short kicking. Use this drill midway through the session. The length of this drill is 80 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.

Skills Kick (long), Handball (average, long), Shepherd.
Purpose This drill teaches players to make correct position front and square to make a handball as easy as possible for their teammate. If they are in the wrong position or leave too early, the handball will be prone to error.

   2.2  Circle kick
For coaching footballers aged U/14 to senior, you will need 12 players and 2+ footballs. Use this drill midway through the session. The length of this drill is 80 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length. This is a kicking drill to practice short kicking and mid-length kicking.

Purpose This drill demands players maintain a high degree of skill when fatigued, as well as conditioning players to run after disposal to provide an option at the next contest.

3. Australian Rules coaching drills - full oval drills

   3.1  Help after poor disposal
For coaching footballers aged U/14 to senior, you will need 20 players, 6 cones and 6+ footballs. Use this drill towards the end of training. This drill practices short kicking, long kicking, goalkicking, quick handballing, mid-length handballing, long handballing and short kicking. The length of this drill is 180 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.

Ages Senior, U/16, U/14.

Skills Kick (goal, short, long), Handball, Crumb.
Purpose Players must learn to chase after their kick in support of the next contest, especially when it has not found its target. This drill teaches running players to work to the next contest after disposal, while key forwards practice leading and goalkicking.

   3.2  Lane Race
For coaching footballers aged U/8 to senior, this drill requires 18+ players, 28 cones and 3 footballs. The length of this drill is 200 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length. This drill practices short kicking, mid-length kicking, long kicking, goalkicking, mid-length handballing and long handballing. Use this drill towards the end of training.

Purpose This fun drill forces your players to concentrate on accurate disposal to win a race between 3 teams. Players can choose the riskier longer kick, or play the percentages by keeping the ball short.

   3.3  Run off the forwards
For coaching footballers aged U/16 to senior, you will need 18 players, 8 cones and 2+ footballs. The length of this drill is 200 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.Use this drill towards the end of training. This drill practices long kicking, quick handballing, mid-length handballing, long handballing and short kicking.

Purpose Some forwards don't like chasing, this can be exploited by players running from the full-back line to provide options for a marking half-back.

   3.4  Defensive and infield switches
For coaching footballers aged U/16 to senior, this drill requires 20+ players, 8 cones and 3+ footballs. This drill practices short kicking, mid-length kicking, long kicking, quick handballing and long handballing. The length of this drill is 180 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.Use this drill towards the end of training.

Skills Kick (short, average, long), Handball (quick, long).
Purpose In the instance where opposition players have dropped a kick behind play, it's best to avoid kicking to this contest and instead switching sideways, creating space for players to lead into.
This drill practices two switches - a long, wide switch in defense to create space, and a central switch to open up a forward's leading area.
