1. Aussie Rules drills - shortball drills

   1.1  Kick, 1-2 handball, retrieve
For coaching footballers aged U/16 to senior, you will need groups of 6 players, 1 cone and 2 footballs per group. The length of this drill is 15 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length. This drill practices short kicking, quick handballing and short kicking. Use this drill early in the training session, or perhaps in between longer exercises for recovery.

Purpose This drill practices three skills in a short burst, and is ideal for pre-season or warm-up.

   1.2  Gather Give Bump
For coaching footballers aged U/14 to senior, this drill requires groups of 8 players, 2 cones and 1 football per group. The length of this drill is 15 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.Use this drill early in the training session, or perhaps in between longer exercises for recovery. This is a handball drill to practice mid-length handballing, short kicking and short kicking.

Skills Handball (average), Shepherd, Crumb. *Light contact or inferred pressure.
Purpose After drawing an opponent players should attempt to take the person engaging them out of the next contest fairly. This drill practices using a bump to knock an opponent off balance after drawing them, hindering their ability to chase the next receiver.

   1.3  Criss-cross handball
For coaching footballers aged U/8 to senior, you will need 12-20 players, 4 cones and 2 footballs. This is a handball drill to practice quick handballing and mid-length handballing. The length of this drill is 15 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.Use this drill early in the training session, or perhaps in between longer exercises for recovery.

Ages Senior, U/16, U/14, U/12, U/10, U/8.

Skills Handball (average, quick). *Light contact or inferred pressure.
Purpose Using peripheral vision to sense incoming players is necessary to avoid being tackled or bumped. This drill simulates players approaching from the side, which requires players to use evasive skills to avoid a collision.

2. Aussie Rules drills - half oval drills

   2.1  Kick to forward options
For coaching footballers aged senior, you will need 18 players, 4 cones and 3+ footballs. This drill practices short kicking, mid-length kicking, long kicking, goalkicking, mid-length handballing, contested marking and short kicking. Use this drill midway through the session. The length of this drill is 100 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.

Skills *Competitive* Kicking, Goalkicking, Handball (average), Contested Mark, Crumb.
Purpose From the centre square, quick handball can release a player who may have several leading forward options.
This drill practices using quick hands in a congested centre square, and then good decision making to select the forward in the best position to receive and score.

   2.2  8-on-3 goalscoring
For coaching footballers aged U/16 to senior, you will need 18 players, 8 cones and 1+ footballs. Use this drill midway through the session. The length of this drill is 80 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.Tackling is used, so consider players with injuries. This drill practices goalkicking, quick handballing, mid-length handballing, long handballing, tackling, short kicking and short kicking.

Skills *Competitive* Kick (goal), Handball, Tackle, Shepherd, Crumb.
Purpose When opponents are outnumbered, it's important to turn those situations into goalscoring opportunities. This drill works on quick handball to move the ball into a position for a running shot on goal.

   2.3  Goalkicking in threes
For coaching footballers aged U/8 to senior, you will need groups of 3 players and 1 football per group. Use this drill midway through the session. This is a kicking drill to practice mid-length kicking, long kicking and goalkicking. The length of this drill is 50 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.

Skills Kick (goal, average, long).
Purpose Converting goal opportunities is critical and often neglected at practice. This drill simulates a set shot at goal, with a person standing the mark and a defender on the goal line.
