1. Aussie Rules coaching drills - shortball drills

1.1 Lane kicking | | For coaching footballers aged U/8 to senior, this drill requires 8+ players, 2 cones and 1+ footballs. The length of this drill is 60 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length. This is a kicking drill to practice short kicking, mid-length kicking and long kicking. Use this drill early in the training session, or perhaps in between longer exercises for recovery.

Some players fail to pickup the ball simply because they don't bend over far enough. This pre-season drill introduces smaller balls to make players bend lower than what's normally required to pick it up, and improves hand-eye co-ordination by using a smaller target. |

2.1 4-on-4 inside 50 | | For coaching footballers aged U/14 to senior, this drill requires 16+ players, 4 cones and 2+ footballs. Use this drill midway through the session. The length of this drill is 50 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.Tackling is used, so consider players with injuries. This drill practices short kicking, long kicking, goalkicking, quick handballing, mid-length handballing, long handballing, contested marking, tackling, short kicking and short kicking.

| Purpose |
Although kicking to the hotspot isn't seen much at AFL level these days, it's still the most dangerous place for the ball to be delivered at local level. This drill teaches players to position themselves front and square of a kick to the hotspot, requiring judgement of the ball in flight, and sprinting ability to get there first. |

| Purpose |
There are times when playing defensively to retain possession is necessary, requiring a cool head and well executed passes, as a turnover can be particularly costly during these periods. This drill works on leading and finding targets under pressure from the opposition. |

After a defensive mark or free, the player will often find the area in front of them (where the ball has come from) congested, and unless looking to defend, should try to switch play to the other side of the ground. This drill demonstrates how two quick lateral kicks can open up space. |
