1. AFL training drills - shortball drills
|
1.1 Give then protect handball | | For coaching footballers aged U/8 to senior, this drill requires 10+ players, 4 cones and 1+ footballs. The length of this drill is 20 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length. This is a handball drill to practice mid-length handballing and short kicking. Use this drill early in the training session, or perhaps in between longer exercises for recovery.

| Purpose |
Players must be conditioned to keep running after disposing of the ball, rather than stopping, assuming their involvement is over. This drill trains players to run to assist the person they have given the ball to with a shepherd and instruction. |

| Purpose |
When an opponent must cover two players, they must choose to continue allowing to ball carrier to progress, covering the next probable recipient, or commit to tackling the player with the ball. Players must learn to draw the opponent, the give to a free player. |

This is a kicking drill to practice long kicking and short kicking. | Purpose |
Players must learn to anticipate the path or vector an opponent will take when attempting to tackle a teammate, then positioning themselves on that path to block the defender's approach. |

| Purpose |
When the field ahead is congested, as sideways switch is a good option as it opens up space for players to lead into. This drill replicates a mark or free to a player, who uses a player running through the backdoor who then switches laterally to an open running player. |

2. AFL training drills - half oval drills
|
2.1 3-on-3-on-3 | | For coaching footballers aged U/16 to senior, you will need 3 grps of 3 players, 6 cones and 1 football. Use this drill midway through the session. The length of this drill is 90 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.Tackling is used, so consider players with injuries. This drill practices short kicking, mid-length kicking, goalkicking, quick handballing, mid-length handballing, long handballing, tackling, short kicking and short kicking.

| Purpose |
Second, third and fourth efforts must be made by players when the ball is in their area. These efforts can be chasing, tackling, running to provide a handball option or applying a shepherd. This drill requires players maintain an enormous workrate to run to defend, then run forward to score, as scoring is difficult. |

Kicking into the person standing the mark is inexcusable as it often causes a turnover or a shot on goal opportunity missed. This drill makes players practice backpeddling quickly from the mark, as well as running to the next contest. |
