1. AFL drills - shortball drills
|
1.1 Three Man Weave | | For coaching footballers aged U/16 to senior, you will need 15 players, 6 cones and 1 football. The length of this drill is 30 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length. This is a handball drill to practice quick handballing, mid-length handballing and short kicking. Use this drill early in the training session, or perhaps in between longer exercises for recovery.

| Purpose |
After handballing to a teammate, players must instinctively protect them. This drill simulates protecting teammates by weaving behind and feigning a shepherd after handballing to them. |

1.2 Short to a diagonal lead | | For coaching footballers aged U/8 to senior, you will need 18 players, 6 cones and 3+ footballs. This is a kicking drill to practice mid-length kicking and long kicking.

| Purpose |
Sometimes a forward can't lead directly towards the ball carrier, as the space in front of them is occupied, so an angular lead is required. This drill practices leading diagonally into space, and kicking to that player's advantage. |

This is a handball drill to practice mid-length handballing and short kicking. | Purpose |
After a player crumbs they must dispose of the ball immediately as they will be hot. The crumber will have their eyes on the ball, so must use ears and peripheral vision to find a teammate. This drill practices handballing-on-the-up to a wide running teammate. |

2. AFL drills - half oval drills
|
2.1 2-on-2 goalscoring | | For coaching footballers aged U/8 to senior, this drill requires 12+ players, 1 cone and 1 football. Tackling is used, so consider players with injuries. This drill practices short kicking, mid-length kicking, long kicking, goalkicking, quick handballing, mid-length handballing, long handballing, contested marking, tackling, short kicking, short kicking and short kicking. Use this drill midway through the session. The length of this drill is 70 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.

| Purpose |
Hard, physical competitive training is sometimes needed to make players match hardened, and is often required following a soft loss. This drill encourages hard attack on a contested ball, with teamwork required to score under pressure. |

2.2 Draw and create a loose man | | For coaching footballers aged U/16 to senior, this drill requires 20+ players, 8 cones and 1 football. Use this drill midway through the session. The length of this drill is 80 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.Tackling is used, so consider players with injuries. This drill practices short kicking, mid-length kicking, long kicking, quick handballing, mid-length handballing, long handballing, tackling and short kicking.

| Purpose |
When a player is outnumbered and has to cover two opponents, they will eventually be forced to stop the run of the ball carrier. Having drawn the opponent, the player can then give a handball to their free teammate, or dummy past the defender. This drill practices running in lines to get past a 4-on-2 contest. |
