1. AFL coaching drills - shortball drills

   1.1  Shepherding square
For coaching footballers aged U/16 to senior, this drill requires groups of 6 players, 4 cones and 1 football per group. The length of this drill is 10 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.Tackling is used, so consider players with injuries. This drill practices tackling and short kicking. Use this drill early in the training session, or perhaps in between longer exercises for recovery.

Skills *Competitive* Tackle, Shepherd.
Purpose Players must not let an opponent get past them and tackle their teammate. This aerobically intense drill makes a player repeatedly responsible for shepherding their teammate from an opponent, while the teammate uses evasive skills to get away from trouble.

   1.2  Circle handball
For coaching footballers aged U/14 to senior, this drill requires 12+ players and 2+ footballs. The length of this drill is 40 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.Use this drill early in the training session, or perhaps in between longer exercises for recovery. This is a handball drill to practice quick handballing.

Skills Handball (quick).
Purpose This drill is physically demanding, teaching players to maintain a high-level of ball handling skill when fatigued, as well as conditioning players to run after disposal to provide an option at the next contest.

   1.3  Play-on around the mark
For coaching footballers aged U/14 to senior, this drill requires groups of 4 players, 2 cones and 1 football per group. This is a kicking drill to practice mid-length kicking and contested marking. The length of this drill is 60 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.Use this drill early in the training session, or perhaps in between longer exercises for recovery.

Skills Kick (average), Contested Mark. *Light contact or inferred pressure.
Purpose After marking the ball, players should move the ball quickly before defenders can occupy the space ahead. This drill teaches players to gain time and space by playing-on from the mark, as well as getting leading teammates to lead towards their preferred kicking leg.

2. AFL coaching drills - half oval drills

   2.1  Diagonal lead to space
For coaching footballers aged U/12 to senior, this drill requires 18+ players, 6 cones and 3+ footballs. This is a kicking drill to practice long kicking. Use this drill midway through the session. The length of this drill is 90 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.

Skills Kick (long).
Purpose Sometimes a forward can't lead directly towards the ball carrier, as the space in front of them is occupied, so an angular lead is required.
This drill practices leading diagonally into space, and kicking long to that player's advantage.

   2.2  Kick to space with numbers
For coaching footballers aged U/14 to senior, this drill requires 20+ players, 4 cones and 2+ footballs. Use this drill midway through the session. The length of this drill is 70 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length. This drill practices long kicking and mid-length handballing.

Skills Kick (long), Handball (average).
Purpose When switching play, players need to run in numbers into the open area. This drill practices kicking to the advantage of a target who has lead diagonally into space, a difficult kick as the direction and weight must be perfect.

   2.3  Longer option kick
For coaching footballers aged U/14 to senior, this drill requires groups of 8 players, 2 cones and 1 football per group. Use this drill midway through the session. This drill practices long kicking, quick handballing and short kicking. The length of this drill is 100 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.

Purpose Players occasionally have the choice of several teammates to kick to. If the longer option is within range and not covered, this option is preferred, as the closer player can turn and run past the longer option, receiving a handball from them.
